Skimming Walls & Ceilings
Skimming is a plastering technique which involves applying a thin coat to walls and ceilings to create the smooth surface required for painting or decorating. Either the skim plaster is applied to an existing plaster finish, or it’s used to cover plasterboard.
If you are looking to renovate an aging property, or you'd just like to start fresh, we can guide you on the best approach no matter how bad it looks. We will assess the walls and make sure that any cracks are taped, and any blown plaster areas are isolated, removed, and then repaired before skimming.
Alternatively, even if the walls are solid but the previous plastering is not up to standard, for example wobbly ceiling lines, dips or protruding areas, by removing or filling in we can deliver you crisp sharp lines and an even polished flat surface that will transform your project entirely.
In some more extreme cases we might need to strip back all the existing plaster to bare brickwork and float them again before we are then able to skim. This method ensures a solid foundation for the topcoat plaster.
Plasterboard Work

Artex Removal
Artex was popular in the UK during the 1970s and 1980s, however as times and trends change more and more clients want this removing from their properties in favour of a smooth finish.
At Griffin Plastering we can often scrape the artex and then skim over the ceiling and walls to leave you with the perfect surface for painting and decorating. In certain situations, such as when the artex texture or patterning is too thick, simply skimming the walls or ceiling would not be enough. On these occasions we use plasterboard to cover the existing artex, and then skimming to a smooth finish.
Traditional Lath & Lime Plasterwork
Traditionally the combination of lath and plaster were used for the structure of walls and ceilings, where narrow strips of wood would be fixed horizontally across the wall studs or ceiling joists and then coated in plaster. Although this technique originated the 1700s, superseding wattle and daub, lath and plaster is still applicable for new walls and ceilings, ideal for irregular shapes where plasterboard would not be the right choice, and it also offers improved accoustic dampening between rooms.
Traditional lime plaster is the recommended (and often required) material when it comes to renovating or restoring historic, period, and certain grade I and grade II listed buildings as it is made from simply sand, water, horsehair, and quicklime. At Griffin Plastering we stay true to the original method, and our highly skilled craftsmen specialise in providing traditional lime plasterwork and external lime rendering for both modern and heritage buildings.
Dry Lining
The process of dry lining refers to the installation of the drywall sheets onto a building's structure, either directly onto the wall studs or onto metal framing. The method uses a taping and joining process in which drywall sheets are joined together and sealed to form a smooth surface ready for painting or wallpapering.
Dry lining involves applying a thin layer of joint compound (or mud
) to the seams between the drywall sheets and then pressing paper or fiberglass tape into the wet compound. Once the compound has dried, it is sanded smooth and another layer of mud is applied, repeating the process until a seamless finish is achieved.

What is floating a wall?
Floating is the term used for any backing coat applied before application of the top layer skim. We are required to float walls before skimming when the surfaces are very uneven or they are bare block or brickwork. We can float a wall either using hardwall plaster or plasterboard.
What is dot and dab plasterboard?
Dot and dabbing is the term used for the application of plasterboard onto bare block or brickwork. The process involves using smaller dots and dabs of a specical bonding plaster to stick the plasterboard to the brickwork, allowing the surface to be skim coated to a smooth finish. This is a much quicker and easier way for floating than using hardwall undercoat plaster.
